Tips for Bettering Symptoms

Unfortunately, EoE has no cure right now but it does have medication and diet treatments. For symptoms of acid reflux and choking, here are a few things I found to help me.

  1. Avoid acidic foods that contribute to acid reflux. That is easier said than done, yet according to Hopkins Medicine, common triggers are: fried and fast food, fatty and spicy foods, citrus fruits, and carbonated drinks. Instead, replace these foods with whole grains, green vegetables, and low pH foods.

  2. Sleep with your head elevated and parallel to the bed. Using one extra pillow to lift your neck can reduce the acid reflux leaking back into your esophagus after a meal. With this, it also helps to allow your stomach when you digest upright. For at minimum of 30 minutes, after a meal resist laying down.

  3. Chew slowly and have a water with you every meal. This tip is simple. You may be the last one at the table but drink water after every few small bites of food will reduce the risk of food impaction.

  4. Learn the Heimlich maneuver. Have your family and friends learn with you. YouTube is a great resource, as well as Red Cross First Aid training. Learning this may save your life, if not a stranger's at a restaurant along the way.
