10 Things To Avoid Using in the Kitchen for Allergy-Friendly Baking and Cooking

One of the most frustrating feelings is when you are almost done with creating something and realize that you missed a step. Whether it's a screw when building an IKEA dresser, covering the trim with tape when painting, or forgetting an ingredient in pancakes. It happens all too often and especially on this diet, which requires attentive precision.

When making the cinnamon sugar pumpkin donuts one night, I realized too late that I had mindlessly used vegetable oil that contains soy, instead of canola oil. Another time, I sprayed the pancake griddle with Pam, which also contains soy. Following this diet has hidden challenges and needs a perfectionist to thoroughly read labels. Who knew Airheads contain wheat?

Here are a few things to avoid when cooking for yourself or loved one who is on the elimination diet for EoE.

  1. Pam. Use avocado or olive oil sprays instead.

  2. Crisco and Butter. Earth Balance Soy-free Butter is a great substitute.

  3. Vegetable oil. Alternatives are; canola oil, olive oil, coconut oil, and sunflower oil.

  4. Store-bought Frostings. Many, if not all, contain milk and/or egg. Opt for a homemade version with powdered sugar and (oat) milk instead.

  5. Restaurant mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli. Mashed potatoes are made with butter, and steamed broccoli can have butter or cheese for flavor. Make sure to clarify the ingredients with the server before ordering.

  6. Sausage patties and links. Many brands use wheat and soy in their pre-packed meats. Be tedious when reading the labels.

  7. Gluten-free breads. Not all gluten-free buns, breads, bagels, etc. are soy and egg free as well. The only brand I've found that is top 8 free is Little Northern Bakehouse.

  8. Mayonnaise. Find vegan, soy-free brands such as Hellman's and Follow Your Heart.

  9. Other condiments. Again, just be diligent. Some condiment brands of ketchup, mustard, and relish contain wheat. Many salad dressings contain milk and/or wheat.

  10. Coffee. To ensure your coffee is made with Oat or Coconut milk, the easiest thing is to make it at home.
